The Dillinger Escape Plan – Ire Works (LP)

The Dillinger Escape Plan is the pioneering group of an uncommon genre – mathcore. Mathcore combines the elements of math rock (uncommin time signatures, crazy rhythm sections) amd hardcore (lots of energy, screamed vocals). With a sound thats unlike anyone or anything else, TDEP makes for an exciting listen.

Ire Works is the 3rd LP from The Dillinger Escape Plan, and they have evolved their sound. It used to be all about “lets make the most insane complicated and rambunctious musoc we can while still sort of making sense”, and has now transformed into something much more mature.

The album starts off with the typical all instrument assault that TDEP is known for, but with slightly more melody. “Fix Your Face” and “Lurch” are prime examples of this. Then they throw a curveball at you. “Black Bumblegum” is one of my favorite songs off the album,  because it combines traditional TDEP sound with less complicated music. Finally, something the average human being can understand.

Right as soon as you think Dillinger has quited down, you get slapped in the face for 3 songs of screaming intensity in a row (don’t fret, they’re all under 2 minutes).

Then Milk Lizard.

Milk Lizard, the bands most successful song. Most likely ever. Combine crazy riffs, horn sections, insane lead work, pounding drums, instense vocals, catchy chorus,  and lyrics that make absolutely no sense, youll have Milk Lizard.

After the ear assault of Milk Lizard, the ablum finishes off nicely with another mellower track “Dead As History”, and “Mouth of Ghosts”.

The Dillinger Escape Plan has sustained for a long time, and I suspect they will for a lot longer. But they question remains, will they keep to their insanely conplicated roots (Lurch, Party Smasher, 82588), or will they mellow out and become something much different (Black Bubblegum,  Milk Lizard, Dead as History)?
